Routine Cleaning

Just like with any room in your house, your deck will require regular cleaning to keep it in good condition. The kind of maintenance you should be performing on your deck depends on what season it is.

• Winter: Snow usually does not need to be removed regularly from a well-built deck, but using a broom or plastic shovel without a metal edge is perfect for removing snow. 

• Summer: Regularly check your deck for rot if it is made out of wood. Check for rusted screws, exposed nails, and cracks to avoid a possible collapse. Also, inspect the railing to make sure it feels solid, so there is no risk of a fall. 

• Autumn and Spring: Be sure to trim any plants on your deck to avoid the development of mold and mildew. Make sure to regularly sweep dust, dirt, and leaves from your deck to avoid rot and mold. Be sure to also check and clean your gutters to make sure your deck is not exposed to excess water. 

Perform Repairs As Needed

If you perform any chemical cleaning, sanding, or staining on your deck, it is crucial that you apply a proper sealer to keep your deck safe from the elements. If you don’t apply sealant, you risk having your boards rot and warp.
